Elf on the Shelf

elf on shelf 1

I wish I had discovered this when my daughter was small. Elf on the Shelf is a bonkers idea that hails from the States (of course). In a nutshell, it’s a retro-looking toy elf that comes with his own special storybook explaining who he is and what he’s about etc.

The elf is essentially a spy. If you’re naughty he will grass you up to Santa, so BEWARE.

That’s how it started. Parents would move the elf around the home (all the better to spy on you) and each morning the kids would look for him and find him somewhere new.

Then it got competitive.

It’s no longer enough that the elf should move from room to room. Oh no. Nowadays it’s infinitely more elaborate. There are entire websites dedicated to Elf On The Shelf scenarios.

Here are some of my favourites.

Very cute.

But then some people, who are clearly on the naughty list, made the elf a bit mischievous. And this kind of thing happened…

When the young son of my sister’s friend was naughty their elf ate the chocolate from his advent calendar to teach him a lesson!

Personally I think this whole thing is hilarious, if a bit time consuming.

If you desperately want one (like me!) then you can purchase him here
